The Miami Heat suffered a major set back on Saturday when they lost 95-105 to the New Orleans Pelicans in the NBA. The Heat are two times defending champions and this loss was their seventh in eleven games evidently showing how their form has deteriorated. To make matters worse, LeBron James who is the Heat’s star player hurt his ankle which means that things might get worse for the team in the coming games if something drastic is not done.
The significance of James in the team was demonstrated by that he was injured as the game was going on and he still remained in the field and ultimately finished with 25 points. Chris Bosh who is a Heat’s forward could not hide his frustration after the game while talking to sports news reporters where he said that the performance of his team was amongst the worst he had ever seen.
The Heat seemed like they had a chance at the beginning of the game where they led 10-2 which turned out to be their biggest lead of the entire game. The Pelicans responded positively as the Heat defence seemed to get sloppy and by the end of the third quarter the scores were 76-72 in favour of the Pelicans. The gap widened further as the Heat seemed to be powerless against the Pelicans’ forwards and with nine minute remaining the scores were 85-76. The gap continued widening and with four minutes remaining the Pelicans were 16 points ahead and the Heat did not get closer than eight points after that.
This recent poor performance by the Heat put their title defence chances in serious jeopardy. When they were winning the last two NBA seasons, the Heat were seen as one of the most consistent and strongest teams in the league. Sports news analysts and commentators had predicted that the team would continue with their good consistent performance to this season. However, if they continue performing as they are currently performing, we are going to have a new champion by the season end.
