Small Business Saturday 2013

Small Business Saturday is an American shopping holiday held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year.

It was first observed on November 27, 2010. The day is intended to encourage American shoppers to consider small retailers and merchants as they think of their holiday shopping. It comes as an answer to Friday after Thanksgiving called Black Friday and the following Monday called Cyber Monday.

This year Small Business Saturday was celebrated on 30th November. U. S President Barack Obama celebrated his Small Business Saturday by visiting a bookstore.

The President went to Politics and Prose in Washington to pick up a few books along with his daughters Sasha and Malia. Obama has been visiting bookstores on Small Business Saturday since the past three years.

Last year the President visited the One More Page Books in the Washington suburb of Arlington, Virginia. Obama purchased a long list of books that included The Kite Runner, Harold and the Purple Crayon, and The Sports Gene.

The President purchased books for all the ages from 5 to 52 years. He remained in the bookstore for around 20 minutes and talked to people.

He paid his bill through a Credit Card. The President also tweeted on Saturday telling people about the importance of supporting small businesses.

Small Business Saturday is designed to drive business to mom and pop shops between the whirlwind of Black Friday sales offered by large retailers and Cyber Monday deals from online sellers.
