Miley Cyrus “Twerking” has become new term in Oxford dictionary

Miley Cyrus’s MTV performance has become quite a heated gossip in the world of celebrities. Despite of getting some positive support form singers like Justin Timberland and her father Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley’s outrageous performance continues to draw negative responses from the critics.

The former Disney star was sharing the stage with the “Blurred Lines” singer Robin Thicke in New York. The singer initially started as a host of giant teddy bears and then eventually stripped down to a skin colored bikini before going wild with a foam finger. The next thing was twerking. Her highly sensual act included rubbing her butt into Robin Thicke’s crotch.

Twerking, a provocative dance, became part of hip-hop culture in the 90s and hence is nothing new. It has been described as the lascivious shaking of the lower extremities with a big assist from the hips on various internet sites.

Some have argued that Cyrus’s twerking was a racist act as twerking is a dance which is typically associated with Afro-Caribbean culture in which women shake their bums provocatively in the direction of their admirers. The New York magazine’s pop critic Jody Rosen also said that the performance was all about race.

The Parents Television Council has issued a complaint against Miley Cyrus saying that the show is not suitable for children below 14 years. Dan Isett, the Director of Public Policy of PTC said that MTV is sexually exploiting women.

Apart from all the positive and negative comments the word “twerking” has become one of the new terms to make the latest Oxford Dictionary update.
