The presence of Serena Williams in the US Open is just like the presence of an elephant in the room. But there is hope in the US Open as two weeks ago in Cincinnati, Li Na gave a tough fight to Williams before losing in the semifinals and World’s second seeded Victoria Azarenka, pushed Williams over the edge, winning a third-set tiebreaker to win the title.
But despite that, she is a feared force at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing, with four titles in her name.
Azarenka went till the third set on Tuesday in a fourth round win against Ana Ivanovic and Li Na too required three sets in a quarter-final win against Ekaterina Makarova. But Serena Williams destroyed Carla Suarez Navarro without even losing a single game with the score being 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals on Tuesday night.
This is the second time since 1968 in women’s singles that an opponent was defeated with such a score in quarterfinals or later.
Li won her match against Makarova, 6-4, 6-7, 6-2, and became the first woman from China to reach the semifinals of the US Open.
Azarenka won over Ivanovic with a score of 4-6, 6-3 and 6-4 to reach the quarter-final as her fourth round win was pushed by a day because of rain. But none of them are playing even comparable to Serena Williams.
It seems that Williams is all set to win this year’s US Open and is no mood for any kind of setback.
