17-year-old Austin Mahone, the current You Tube sensation, took home the “Artist to Watch” award at the MTV Video Music awards on Sunday.
The singer nabbed the award for his third single “What About Love”. Mahone will release his debut album on October 8th. The award is presented to artists to honor the best in the music video medium. The award is a statue in the shape of an astronaut give to the winner.
His song “What About Love” was at number 18 on Mainstream Top 40 charts. Austin beat out Iggy Azalea’s “Work”, “Twenty One Pilots”, The Weekend’s “Wicked Games” and Zedd’s “Clarity”.
In addition to the new Song of the Summer Accolade, there are two more VMA categories in which viewers select the winner.
The singer also performed his single during the star studded show. This was his first time ever at VMAs.
In a brief meeting with The Hollywood Reporter he said that he feels amazing and it was like an honor to be on the carpet. Adding further he said he couldn’t have asked for a better night as not only he performed but also won the award.
His boyish good looks and his music have earned this star the nickname “Baby Bieber”. Just like Bieber, Austin also gained attention with popular videos on You Tube in 2011.
Mahone, during his acceptance speech thanked God and his mother, who raised him as a single mom. Austin brought his mother as his date to VMAs awards.
