2015 Subaru WRX STI release date, features, and specs review

The leaked images come just days after Subaru confirmed their new WRX STI that will be officially unveiled at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show next week.

For the seventh year in a row, Subaru will run a car in the 24 hours Nurburgring endurance race, and their new one will be based on the latest STI set to officially debut next week at the Detroit Auto Show. The STI racecar will compete in the SP3T class.

A chiseled body kit, punched out wheel arch flares and a large rear wing complete the STI ensemble. Power will mostly come from an upgraded version of the 2015 WRX’s 2.0-liter turbocharged, direct-injected boxer-four, although it’s possible that the new STI will retain the current model’s 2.5-liter displacement.

While there is no word yet on performance or price, we do know power could around the 220kW mark, 21kW more than the standard WRX.

As usual, all-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission will be standard; the 2015 WRX’s optional CVT seems a little out of character for this more intense performance model. Expect more aggressive styling to distinguish the STI from the WRX.

Subaru is keeping most of the details under wraps until the WRX STI’s January 14 unveiling, but as with many of the company’s recent models, the script seems familiar.

Subaru fans know what they want, and the company is happy to give it to them. America will be the first overseas market to sell the STI, then the UK and Europe. We will know more after the cars official reveal at Detroit next week.
